@trannerz: welcome back!  The boy (presumably you're referring to the boy with the missing front tooth) is the son of Danee and Soe Dol, conceived after their wedding, and born after Soe Dol's death.  About EC...the ending didn't exactly tell us anything about her finding out Iljimae's true identity.  But if I were EC, hearing the villagers' talk about Iljimae (many of whom knew Iljimae's true identity), I would have made the connection to his true identity.  Besides, the time they met prior to her departure to Jeju island, (when Shi Wan, her brother, insisted that Yongee meet EC to say final good bye) Yongee had that solemn, subtle affectionate look in his eyes towards her.  If EC were familiar with his eyes as Iljimae, I am sure she would have seen the same look in his eyes as Yongee.  As far as Iljimae being alive or not, I think that he may live on...since this drama is about why he became Iljimae in the first place :-), and they also showed Iljimae in action near the end.  It's just the imagination of viewers anyhow.

@Samantha, Fallendevil, E-blues: Congratulations on winning the prize for Pix & Music Challenge.  It has been enjoyable to listen to the music and all of your posts.
Thanks E i p h o s_huyen and those who cast the votes for me as well... This was fun.

@Sak: welcome back! Sure, the ending is sort of open...and I guess viewers may interpret it any way they see fit.

That made much more sense. Thanks alot for the clarifications Mareblu!

[SBS 2008] Iljimae/ 일지매 [English sub Ep.20 End] - Drama & Movie Discussion - ,

This will be my final post, in this thread,  as the Coordinator for KST_Cichlid, and as the moderator for this English box.  I have had many fun moments in this Iljimae thread, thanks to all of you!  You can trust my sincerity when I say that your support was the crucial encouragement that we needed during Cichlid's darkest hours.  Since we are amongst friends, here, in this thread, please allow me to share with you a few of the difficulties that we encountered along the way to get to this point in our journey.

As you know, Cichlid is a very young subbing team to the fansub world.  We started out with an acorn vision of sharing our passions for Korean Entertainment, via the English fansubbing channel. Pioneer Cichlid members were spearheaded by LinhtinhHp, along with the following subbers:  baogam, heoconphaphach, Langtu, Los_Angeles_20, ic3cream, Anhthu and Latuongtu.   Baogam was a class act Coordinator, unlike yours truly! :))  We had lots of fun in the beginning, before the stress of all our hectic schedules got to us!  The sudden loss of several members of Cichlid left a huge gap in our subbing team.  "ON AIR" was a very hard drama to do English subbing for!  With these setbacks, we were seriously in jeopardy of being the first subbing team, ever , to have to call it quits, even before completing the  first drama!

You probably could still recall that Cichlid was having problems, for a while,  with the sub files almost every week!  That was due to the fact that while Fallendevil was busy taking his exams, I had to juggle between interviewing new subbers and taking care of ON AIR ,as well as Iljimae.  My technical skills weren't that good to begin with, and with all the rushing about, the results were a little  bit shy of being labeled as major disasters! :(   We needed more help, or a complete overhaul in our subbing process, but how ?!  That was such a stressful time then, but we were too stubborn to call it quits altogether!

At about that time, several people came forward and joined Cichlid.  They all are fantastic translators:  Ginna, Fox, bien_nganthu, Comichubble, DBSKuknow, Fuong_Phoebe, Funzel_gap, NhNp, Helen Oneil, Russianborn, and Jessfan.  Since then, we have lost a few of the new fish along the way, but I am grateful for the remaining ones in our KST pool of talented subbers.  Also, our S.O.S. distress signals were  picked up by a few good Samaritans and their kind words of encouragement were more than comforting.  They gave us the strength to go on and complete the task we set out to do!  Which is:  to propel Cichlid_KST to a 2 drama completion mark, which is exactly where we are today, thank God! :)

Starting from Episode 5, we slowed down quite a bit to focus more on the quality of the actual English sub files.  With some significant changes to our process and a little more sacrifice, we started the slow ascension up the quality ladder.   With this overhaul, timing  was an issue which many viewers took exception to, and we had no choice but to bite the bullet and hope all would be worth it in the end for us!   Hard work, we didn't mind so much!  We gladly gave our time, because we truly believed in our cause.  But, harsh criticisms  were verbalized and the unfairness of it all were getting to us!  Looking back, I am grateful for peacht over D_Addicts for locking the Iljimae thread on June 27, 2008.  It was very demoralizing to know that people actually thought that we had no dedication at all to what we were doing!  I am glad we stuck with it and pulled through!  For that reason, from now on, whenever I watch a fansub drama, I will appreciate the many hours of hard work and love that is invested into those sub files by the subbing team.

As I reach the end of this Iljimae thread, I feel an overwhelming sense of sadness wash over me.  Parting is such sweet sorrow, since I have made so many friends in KST, and even more  friends for the duration of my stint in the Cichlid subbing team.   Trust is hard to come by, but somehow in KST, I always had it bestowed freely upon me!  Thanks to Shark, ss V, ss CC, ss Greenrose and ss Chris for always helping me.  Thanks to Fallendevil for being the best partner there is!  Thanks for staying and completing this journey with me.  Without you, there would not be a second completion at all for Cichlid.  Thanks to a certain Anonymous someone, for selflessly helping me to complete my portion of Iljimae, in glory.  Without your help and encouragement, I would have been less than an adequate Coordinator!   Thanks to all my wonderful Cichlid subbing team members :  Los_Angeles_20, ic3cream, Fox, Dbskuknow, Comichubble, Fuong_Phoebe, Russianborn, Ginna, bien_nganthu, Funzel_gap...you guys are the best translators one can hope to work with!   Thanks for the happy memories with Cichlid.

Last, but not least, I would like  to say thanks to all of you who came into KST just to support the subbing team, via this Iljimae thread.   Your thoughtfulness is very much appreciated and we hope that you will continue to support Cichlid subbing team in all its future projects and more! :))  Thanks to Canthi & miss mareblu for always being there for emotional support! You guys are indeed my true blue friends.

And on that note, I bid you, farewell!

of course NOT. Just only latuongtu leaves due to her busy life. KST-Cichlid will continue to exist and bring more and more good quality-E-subs to everyone. Having said that, please continue to cheer and support KST-Cichlid. KST-Cichlid will come back shortly with a new project "Tazza". Stay tune everyone, and see how strong KST-Cichlid has grown, ^_^

Friends of Iljimae's English thread:

It has been a learning experience for me joining this thread and riding along this journey with all of you, esp. with Cichlid :-).  The weekly anticipation of the double episodic release of Eng subs, various discussions with the participants in this thread as well as the so-called "challenges" set by Latuongtu prior to the subs release have been enjoyable and fun for me!  I shall miss this thread and its memorable moments when I had to think of something to post for the challenge, be it music, pictures or some "amateur attempts" at writing poems :-) for certain scenes from  the drama.   I shall miss a "certain member" whose "brief and short" posts were usually about pushing for subs and then he finally had the "guts" to make a serious effort to post a short poem :-) to meet La's challenge.  I shall miss Samantha for her creative, entertaining posts as well as her cheerful presence in this thread.  You sure kept our thread more alive and visited, never a dull moment with you around :-).  Thanks Samantha!  I shall miss DadhaBai for his analytical questions about many things related to the drama, the farfetchedness of some elements in the drama as it certainly was interesting to hear you point out the "nonsensical or unrealistic" side of the story in a particular episode,  the bloopers, the syphoning question that you raised which was answered by rain_23, and the question about English vocabulary used by our subbers in one ep.   This thread is more interesting because of discussion and questions like these.  Thanks Dadhabai.  You have a very keen analytical and observant mind!

Thanks to TrannerZ, Sak, Duranis, Desideratum, rain_23, the_Wise_two, and many others...etc (sorry I can't remember all) who had visited and made such positive contributions here.  Everyone's participation was the source of strength and encouragement for the newly formed team to rely on when having to face with time-constraints and the difficult challenge of subbing the drama itself.  The subbing team’s work was indeed a labor of love and passion for the K-drama.  It was drawn from the commitment to share it with the English speaking fans around the world!

Thanks to the subbing team members Ginna, Los_angeles_20, Fallendevil and many others who made contributions or answered to technical questions in this thread.

Thanks Latuongtu for sharing your difficulties along this journey.  I am certain that many fans out there do appreciate the work that you and the team had done.  There’s always a first in everything, the first step being the worst, with many obstacles and challenges along the way.  There is no greater lesson than the actual experience itself, is there?  After all, you and your team had unwavering commitment to see through this project and now it’s over!  Congratulations on the project completion!  Well-done!

Overall, the drama is worth watching for its storyline and themes.   Parental love, filial love, true love, love for your humanity, loyalty, friendship, the pursuit of truth, righteousness, and good versus evil are the themes in the drama in my humble opinion.   I particularly loved these characters: Bong Soon, for her undying sacrifice for her true love and her strong will; Soe Dol, for his foolishness at times and still having a kind heart, unconditional, pure love for Danee in those early years even though she didn’t really care for him until much later; Shi Wan –a character we loved to hate for his mischief or comic relief moments in younger days, and later I appreciated him for being a supportive friend to Yongee; Kongkal, the assasin-turned-adoptive-father of Bong Soon and the martial arts master of Yongee, for his character’s strength as well as comic relief moments.  These are the supporting roles in the drama but they are essential to the story and development of the main character, our hero, Iljimae.   I also loved Shi Hoo’s character for his dilemma or plight, as a young child being thrown into Byun Shik’s family under a false premise that he was Byun’s son, having to live in a “hostile atmosphere” with a jealous Shi Wan, Byun Shik’s son, then later having identity crisis as to who his real father may be, Soe Dol or Byun Shik (?), and then being re-told by his own mother that his real father is neither one of them but a “traitor deserving to die”, Lee Won Ho.  This is a pathetic role to be in, since he had to deal with complicated feelings and the inner struggle of having a “hidden or mistaken identity” (if you will) while having to face his half-brother Iljimae and almost killing him in the pursuit in his duty as a Royal Palace Guard for the King.   It was always a roller-coaster feeling for me whenever Shi Hoo and Iljimae were face-to-face or fighting with each other while not knowing they are half-brothers yet, due to the possibility that one of them may be killed by the other, a possible tragic ending.   I heaved a sigh of relief at the end when Shi Hoo finally found out the truth and turned himself around to help Iljimae, his brother, in the pursuit of truth.  This is the growth or maturity of his character (Shi Hoo),  as you may recall that he was trained by the loyal Body Guard to the King, the assasin Sa Chun, a master with no-mercy “killer’s philosophy”.  The irony is that Sa Chun was killed by his own disciple as Shi Hoo slashed him with the sword and said, “Regardless of who he might be, a Bodhisattva or a comrade, as long as he steps in my way, I'll kill him.”  That is the exact philosophy that Shi Hoo had learned from his master Sa Chun.   Then, Shi Hoo affirmed his real identity by saying, “I’m also Lee Won Ho’s son”, marking the end of his identity crisis.

Anyway, glad to be able to share with you these thoughts as I finish my journey in this thread.  This has been a nice and wonderful thread with many members like you supporting KST.

Please continue to support the Cichlid team in their next future projects.

Many thanks to everyone again! Gamsa Hamnida!

@Huyen: No trouble at all.  I just didn’t want to “butcher” your nick, but if that’s what you prefer, then your wish will be honored.

Thank you Mareblue for all your kind words,  it was great to have met and know you and all the others via this thread. Not seen the others around maybe they left this thread/forum totally, till a new drama is sub. Now that I finished Iljimae, I doubt I be around here much but I am just pm/email/msn away or find me via d-addicts. I am greatful for La's for all her hard work and it tiz sad to see her last post for the team.  But a busy life is a busy life and maybe later on she will come back when she has time.  She also mention back the days when there was so many bad feedback on the earlier episodes Iljimaes subs. That was the time also that I decided to register on the board to show my support for the team (wasn't an easy decision as it was scary that the board was in another langauge!), as I know it's not easy to do subs despite how quick we watch them, there was no need to be so cruel, especially that without subs some of us may never be able to watch dramas not in the language we understand. It was uncalled for and seeing the situation had hurt me even thou I have no input towards the subs. Thou I felt that via this thread and the contrubtions in the thread that I was part of the team HA!HA!  Anyhow all the best and good luck for La ^ _ ^

@ Mareblue          I never even giving a thought to the little kid at the end, now that you said it. I just thought he may have been adopted and left it at that.  Not for one moment did it hit me that he was concieved during the brief marriage. As for the rest of your explanation ... it does make sense and thank you for your explanation. With the way it had ended anyhow, there could have been lots of ending for viewers imagination.

@trannerZ: I watched the last two episodes but I didn't cry. Only when they show the production team at end of episode 20, I felt very sad.
Iljimae has ended. :o((

@La: You're leaving so soon?... Thanks to you for your money!! I was poor before I joined this thread but now I am rich. :o))

@ginna: Thanks so much for teaching me how to post and delete replies, images and music.

@all: Thanks so much for your posts. I read and I liked them all. Take care and Smile always!! TTFN...
