"ON AIR" has been making wave on the ratings chart every week. It is easy to understand why it is so much fun to watch this drama. The characters are eccentric, the bantering are quick and sharp, a ...
Latuongtu!!! I've finally made it!!! Are you proud of me? It took me long enough, don't you think? Hi everyone! My user id is forever21 but I'm much older than 21. It was the only name I could think of at the moment, cause I was having so many problems registering. I'm not Vietnamese but Korean American and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't let me in. So after being sad for a little while, I decided to use the brains God gave me and figured it out! Yippee!
Anyway, I too have enjoyed this series very much. So what epiodes are you on so far? Being Korean and Korean speaking, I have seen up to the current episode (chapt 10). One of the interesting highlights to this series is how extensive the writer is taking the behind-the-scenes stories to include so much of the conflicts that happen backstage. There was only one other drama that dealt with this issue and the drama was called "Screen" but it mostly dealt with romantic relationships so I lost interest in it after the first 3 episodes.
What I love about this series is that the "romance" is taking a back seat and I'm getting a close look at the machinations of what it actually takes to make a drama. I had no idea the level of nastiness that can exist in multiple layers of power relationships. Now, don't think that I don't like romance. I do. I'm a shameless lover of romance. BUT, I DETEST how writers will put couples together for "romantic" situations in lieu of a dynamic storyline. I think that's the worst kind of cop out and I'm too savvy for that (actually, anyone having an IQ of 3 or more is too savvy for that as well). In this particular drama, what I especially love is how the writer is pitting these characters against each other and yet seemingly for one another as well.
It's clear that KM's first impression of SA was not a good one. After all, she slapped him after he made her aware of the reality she should have realized. But after he convinced SA to come on board with the drama "Ticket to the Moon", he saw the life she is forced to live. Now, having said that, I'm not a huge sympathizer to SA's situation. But when SA had flee from her legions of fans in Taiwan, with KM dragging SA along, I think he realized that it's not all fun and games being a celebrity, where he/she can't really walk about normally without being hounded by fans/paparazzi alike. Similarly, KM's relationship with YE wasn't smooth either, as he was forced to chase after her in Taiwan. And yet, I think KM saw YE's vulnerabilities and insecurities and realized that she needed someone constant and stable and who wouldn't take NO for an answer.
YE's first impression of SA was when she left YE standing on the stage with SA's award and worsened at the meeting to discuss a potential drama. YE felt justified in vilifying SA as a rude, arrogant and selfish celebrity whose pretty face in commercials meant an automatic prelude to a successful acting career. (For those who haven't seen it, I'm sorry, I have no idea how to highlight these words so if you DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED, DON'T READ THE FOLLOWING 2 SENTENCES!! And yet, in episode 10, we see that YE feels badly for SA who doesn't seem to have a friend to share her inner struggles with. SA, on the other hand, sees YE as someone shallow who only wants high ratings rather than working on her art of writing and yet through this process, sees how difficult it is for YE to write and try to get good actors/actresses to work on her projects and what those entails.
I will be back to delve more into the other tangled relationships but this is what I mean when I say that the writer of this series (Lee Eun Sook) has put the 4 characters at the core of an onion and we're seeing a layer of these relationships peel away week by week.
Whew! What an introductory post! I'll be back later to post some more. Let me know if you have any questions about the series so far. I'm Korean speaking so I don't need subtitles and if there is any questions I can answer, let me know. I can't wait for ep 11 tomorrow!!!!
See you later and have a great day,
