[SBS 2008] On Air / 온에어 [ Engsub 21 End]

so far I think KHN, SYA and LBS have performed their acting skills very well. Having said that they are all experienced actresses and actor, no wonder and no surprise they are doing a really good job in this drama. PYH is just ok for me. I mean, except his quite good-looking face, there are tons of actors out there able to act and express emotions the same as he does or even better than him. Well, at least he has a quite good voice to sing and i like his songs in this drama.

I don't really care who should end up with whom overall. Though I prefer OSA is better off with JK, i think she's with PYH at the end (i don't know, just feeling tell me so). Even if OSA is set to be lonely, that's fine though hehe.

p/s: excuse me, i don't know why i have a trouble typing English here. When i type, it just comes up Vietnamese tone signs like ^ ' even though i already turn off Vietnamese typing mode. It's kinda bugging me cuz take too long to be able to write down an English word.

"ON AIR" has been making wave on the ratings chart every week.  It is easy to understand why it is so much fun to  watch this drama.  The characters are eccentric, the bantering are quick and sharp, a ...
Latuongtu!!! I've finally made it!!! Are you proud of me?  It took me long enough, don't you think?  Hi everyone!  My user id is forever21 but I'm much older than 21.  It was the only name I could think of at the moment, cause I was having so many problems registering. I'm not Vietnamese but Korean American and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't let me in.  So after being sad for a little while, I decided to use the brains God gave me and figured it out!  Yippee!

Anyway, I too have enjoyed this series very much.  So what epiodes are you on so far?  Being Korean and Korean speaking, I have seen up to the current episode (chapt 10).  One of the interesting highlights to this series is how extensive the writer is taking the behind-the-scenes stories to include so much of the conflicts that happen backstage.  There was only one other drama that dealt with this issue and the drama was called "Screen" but it mostly dealt with romantic relationships so I lost interest in it after the first 3 episodes.

What I love about this series is that the "romance" is taking a back seat and I'm getting a close look at the machinations of what it actually takes to make a drama.  I had no idea the level of nastiness that can exist in multiple layers of power relationships.  Now, don't think that I don't like romance.  I do.  I'm a shameless lover of romance.  BUT, I DETEST how writers will put couples together for "romantic" situations in lieu of a dynamic storyline.  I think that's the worst kind of cop out and I'm too savvy for that (actually, anyone having an IQ of 3 or more is too savvy for that as well).  In this particular drama, what I especially love is how the writer is pitting these characters against each other and yet seemingly for one another as well.

It's clear that KM's first impression of SA was not a good one.  After all, she slapped him after he made her aware of the reality she should have realized.  But after he convinced SA to come on board with the drama "Ticket to the Moon", he saw the life she is forced to live.  Now, having said that, I'm not a huge sympathizer to SA's situation.  But when SA had flee from her legions of fans in Taiwan, with KM dragging SA along, I think he realized that it's not all fun and games being a celebrity, where he/she can't really walk about normally without being hounded by fans/paparazzi alike.   Similarly, KM's relationship with YE wasn't smooth either, as he was forced to chase after her in Taiwan.  And yet, I think KM saw YE's vulnerabilities and insecurities and realized that she needed someone constant and stable and who wouldn't take NO for an answer.

YE's first impression of SA was when she left YE standing on the stage with SA's award and worsened at the meeting to discuss a potential drama.  YE felt justified in vilifying SA as a rude, arrogant and selfish celebrity whose pretty face in commercials meant an automatic prelude to a successful acting career.  (For those who haven't seen it, I'm sorry, I have no idea how to highlight these words so if you DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED, DON'T READ THE FOLLOWING 2 SENTENCES!!  And yet, in episode 10, we see that YE feels badly for SA who doesn't seem to have a friend to share her inner struggles with.  SA, on the other hand, sees YE as someone shallow who only wants high ratings rather than working on her art of writing and yet through this process, sees how difficult it is for YE to write and try to get good actors/actresses to work on her projects and what those entails.

I will be back to delve more into the other tangled relationships but this is what I mean when I say that the writer of this series (Lee Eun Sook) has put the 4 characters at the core of an onion and we're seeing a layer of these relationships peel away week by week.

Whew!  What an introductory post!  I'll be back later to post some more.  Let me know if you have any questions about the series so far.  I'm Korean speaking so I don't need subtitles and if there is any questions I can answer, let me know.  I can't wait for ep 11 tomorrow!!!!

See you later and have a great day,

@Forever21,
I am so proud of you Soonjap for having the first post on this day! ^^

We are currently on episode 9 (Cichlid get to see it first since we have to do the sub for it).  I think your assessment of the 4 main characters are pretty much on target!  Most people either like or dislike the two leading ladies based on their perception of the scriptwriter's abrasive personality or the divine miss Oh's seemingly bad behavior.   Personally, I think the two ladies are the flip sides of the same coin.  That is:  Being a woman in the working world is tough, and it takes lots and lots of personal sacrifices to be on top of your game.

Scriptwriter YE is a woman on top of her carreer, standing by the remains of her crumbled marriage, while trying to do the right thing for her son.  She doesn't have  lot of times for herself, trying her best to be a scriptwriter in demands, by sacrificing her creativities for the cliches, in exchange for the sure thing-high ratings for her scripts.  By the end of the day, she felt vindicated by the popularity of her dramas, a semi-good job as a single mother, while giving way to feeling lonely whenever she thinks her son's already fell asleep!  Her defense mechanism to the world is showing the people around her that scriptwriter Suh is an independent thinker, and one that doesn't care whether others viewed her as brassy or not.  What's important to her is being highly sought after for her high ratings scripts, and her good relationship with her son.  All else taking a back seat!   But as the drama progress on, we see an uncertain and childish YE.  One who is vulnerable beyonds her age, and who required some handling with care from PD Lee.  Once she relinquished her tight control on being the tried and true high ratings scriptwriter, and simply go with her gut feelings.

The divine miss Oh is the anti-thesis of scriptwriter Suh!  She is a cunning fox, whose beauty is her prized commodity.  Miss Oh is laughing all the way to the bank, being so highly paid for one who is constantly criticized as not knowing her craft well.  All her years in the cut-throat entertainment world has taught her one lesson to heart, and that is:  To be on top of your game, you have to be ruthless and take no prisoner.  You have to demanding to the extreme, because the public expected such bad behavior from a super star!   Miss Oh is the epitome of a major star, since her behavior is obnoxious beyond belief!  She is adored by her public, but it is a lonely spot at the top, since she's basically an ice princess in her own impersonal castle.  She is neither anyone's friend, nor they are hers.   Basically, the ice princess won't thaw out, until Manager Jang comes back into her life.  The love and care of a good man is the number one ingredient needed in order to humanized miss Oh.

My conclusion?  Being a working woman in today's world is an endless balancing act.  Having it all, mean more than being tip-top in your carreer, so women, beware! ^^

Have anyone thought about the possibility of scriptwriter Suh's ex-husband will be coming back into her life, and reclaims her heart?   Indeed, this would be fitting with the drama's teaser:  Onesided love affair.
